David Mountain

It is with much sadness I announce the passing of David Mountain at the tender age of just 93. David passed away peacefully last Sunday, 18 January. David was still cycling and active just prior to his passing.

To say David was a corner stone of the Club would be no exaggeration...he was Mr Squash Club and had been a continuous member since the 1950's, more than seventy years, the longest serving member. In 1990 he was bestowed an honorary membership for services to the Club, as Chairman and latterly, as a member of the board of Ashtead Squash Rackets Ltd.

David was passionate about our Club, always interested in what the Committee was up to and responsible for creating and continually updating the history of the Club.

It comes as no surprise that he met his wife Valerie at the Club.

He was unique in that he was the only member who had such a broad knowledge of all things Ashtead Squash Club, in addition, he was custodian of umpteen boxes of achieve material...everything from 1960's match score cards to Committee meeting minutes dating back several decades.

On a personal note, David was a great supporter of myself and the Committee. Something that I have always been grateful for. I have countess exchanges of emails with David on a whole raft of matters, but the footnote of a particular email is listed below. This perfectly show cases how David felt about the Club.

To Valerie and family, the Committee extends it's deepest sympathy at this sad time, but we must also celebrate the life of a wonderful human being.

Funeral details will follow when known.

Michael Standring

Chairman

ps - did I mention previously my worry about all the items which may bother my family when I go? Could the Club keep an Archive of old interesting or important things such as copies of old Handbooks, Fixture cards, old fashioned accounts, some correspondence (perhaps including some of the bits which Nicky passed to me recently!). My memory has become less reliable since my vaccination in January – or is it just age? They might add up to 2 box files or whatever they are called.
